The Weariness of Room 214

Why I built the place I couldn't find

You probably know the feeling.

You drop your suitcase in another hotel room. It’s clean, comfortable, efficient… and somehow, something already feels slightly off.

No real place to cook yourself a proper meal.

No comfortable sofa to unwind on after work.

The next morning, breakfast among strangers, everyone silently scrolling through their phones.

For an occasional trip, that’s perfectly fine.

When you travel regularly, though, it slowly takes its toll — on your energy, your mood, and that subtle feeling of never quite belonging anywhere.

I looked for something different for years.

I never found it.

So I built it.

This Is Not a Hotel

There is an image I often come back to.

The Belgian painter René Magritte famously wrote beneath one of his paintings:

“This is not a pipe.”

He wasn’t denying reality.

He was inviting us to look beyond appearances.

That idea stayed with me.

When I first created Maison d’Angélique in Niort, it wasn’t meant as a provocation.

It was simply an invitation to imagine accommodation differently.

Neither a Hotel nor a Shared Flat

Koralia is, above all, a home.

A real one.

Six private rooms, each with its own bathroom.

A fully equipped kitchen.

A generous living room.

A terrace.

A Wellness Space upstairs.

Just 50 metres from Niort TGV station.

It isn’t student shared housing, where fridge shelves become a diplomatic issue.

It isn’t a traditional hotel either, where guests sometimes feel expected to disappear into their room.

It was designed for adults who know what they need:

their own private room,

a real kitchen whenever they want to cook,

a comfortable lounge instead of spending the evening inside an 18-square-metre bedroom,

and complete freedom to be sociable…

or not.

Sharing is an option.

Never an obligation.

What I Chose to Include — and Why

I’ve been practising kinesiology for over thirty years and have spent just as long exploring the effects of stress on everyday life.

When I designed Koralia, one question guided everything:

What would it take for a business trip to feel like something other than a grey parenthesis?

The answer wasn’t another hotel service.

It was creating the right conditions.

No need to drive across town looking for a gym.

No need to search for a restaurant simply to spend an evening somewhere pleasant.

Everything is already here.

An infrared sauna.

A Chi Vitalizer.

Psio light and sound relaxation.

Massage.

Kinesiology sessions.

Just a few steps from your room.

Guests remain completely free to use them…

or simply enjoy a good night’s sleep and carry on with their stay.

I created the conditions.

You decide how to use them.

My Presence — and My Absence

I’m not the host waiting by the front door with a permanent smile and a list of activities.

I’m available.

By WhatsApp.

By phone.

By email.

If something needs solving, I solve it.

If you need recommendations, guidance or support, I’m here.

If you’ve booked a massage, a kinesiology session or another wellness experience, we’ll meet then.

The rest of the time, the house runs by itself.

And I’m rather proud of that.

Because good hospitality shouldn’t depend on someone being permanently present.

It should depend on thoughtful design.

Who Is Koralia Really For?

For professionals who have already spent enough nights in anonymous business hotels.

For couples looking for a comfortable home base rather than another standard hotel room.

For people relocating to Niort for a few weeks.

For anyone who wants a place that feels lived in rather than simply occupied.

If, while reading this, something resonates…

you’ll probably feel at home here.
